Linear analysis of surface deflection in bénard-marangoni instability

چکیده
2014 Linear analysis is used to study the free surface deflections of a fluid heated from below. Numerical calculations provide the regions for which the relief is convex or concave and the influence of the fluid parameters on the deflection. These theoretical results agree very well with the experimental ones obtained previously. J. Physique 46 (1985) 2047-2051 1 DTCEMBRE 1985,

Three-dimensional Marangoni–Bénard flows in square and nearly square containers
Numerical continuation is used to follow branches of steady solutions to the three-dimensional Marangoni–Bénard problem in a zero gravity environment. The upper surface of the fluid is heated by a constant heat flux while the bottom is maintained at a constant temperature. Instability arises due to temperature-dependent surface tension effects but surface deflection is ignored. Containers with ...
متن کاملInstabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane
Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...
متن کاملLinear and nonlinear Rayleigh–Bénard–Marangoni instability with surface deformations
Thermoconvective instabilities in a bilayer liquid–gas system with a deformed interface are investigated. In the first part of the work which is devoted to a linear approach, emphasis is put on the role of the upper gas layer on the instability phenomenon. The condition to be satisfied by the gas to remain purely conductive is established. The so-called Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation is disc...
متن کاملBénard-Marangoni thermal oscillators: An experimental study
An experimental study of time-dependent Bénard-Marangoni convection in small aspect ratio containers and high Prandtl number fluids is presented. Two similar systems with the same aspect ratio, depth, and type of fluid are compared: one with adiabatic lateral boundaries and the other with open boundaries. In spite of the fact that very different plan forms and flows appear, both systems exhibit...
متن کاملJustification of an Approximation Equation for the Bénard-Marangoni Problem
The Bénard-Marangoni problem is a mathematical model for the description of a temperature dependent fluid flow in very thin liquid layers with a free top surface. The liquid is bounded from below by a horizontal plate of a certain temperature. Above the liquid there is an atmosphere cooler than the bottom plate. There is a purely conducting steady state, where the liquid is at rest. This state ...
